BOARD BIOS

Bill Campbell, MD, FAWM, DiMM

Chief

Bill has been an emergency medicine physician for 35 years after a Family Medicine residency at Penn State Hershey, PA. He is presently the Local Emergency Medical Advisor for multiple National Park Service units in TN and the Medical Director for the Tennessee side of AMRT. He is an instructor for NPS Basic Technical Rescue Training East and the NPS Swift Water Incident Management Training and a member of the Great Smoky Mountains NP Tech Rescue Team. He is the Mountain Rescue Association (MRA) Appalachian Region Chair and also the MRA Medical Committee Chair. He trains regularly in wilderness search and rescue techniques incorporating rope access and immediate and prolonged EMS care. He is currently a FAA Part 107 pilot for the team, with aspirations of growing AMRT’s drone response capabilities. He completed his Diploma in Mountain Medicine in Nepal with MMSN/ UIAA. He lives in Oak Ridge with his wife and enjoys many outdoor endeavors with her including photography, camping, hiking and backcountry kayaking.

Jim McLean

Deputy Chief

Jim moved to the mountains of western NC after serving 22 years and retiring from the U.S. Navy as a Naval Engineer. He attended AB Tech Community College in Asheville NC and received an Associates of Applied Science degree in Emergency Medical Sciences and a National Registry Paramedic certification. Jim joined the Appalachian Mountain Rescue team in July of 2018 and has since certified as NASAR
Sartech 2, NASAR SARtech Tracker, and Manager of the lost person incident (MLPI). In 2022 Jim completed the National Park Service Basic Technical Rescue training and has returned in 2023 and 2024 as an instructor for the course. Jim also works in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park as a seasonal Preventative Search And Rescue (PSAR) ranger and PSAR VIP.

Robert Green

Seth Hawkins, MD, FAEMS, MFAWM, DiMM

Dr. Seth Collings Hawkins is an anthropologist, writer, and physician, double board certified in emergency medicine and EMS, and is founder of the Appalachian Mountain Rescue Team, which he currently serves as Board Chair and co-medical director. He also serves as medical advisor for REI, the NC Outward Bound School, and the Student Conservation Association, and medical director (LEMA) of US Forests in NC and the Outer Banks—Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout National Seashores. He is co-author of Vertical Aid: Essential Wilderness Medicine for Climbers, Trekkers, and Mountaineers and editor of the textbook Wilderness EMS. He earned his Fellowship in the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM) with the inaugural class in 2007, and also became the first physician designated a Master Fellow by the Academy of Wilderness Medicine in 2014, with specialization in wilderness EMS. He earned his Fellowship in the Academy of EMS with the inaugural class in 2014. He serves as Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Wake Forest University as well as Associate Director of the Wake Forest University Wilderness Medicine Fellowship.

Andrew Morgan

Chris Peluso, DO, FAWM, DiMM

Chris is a physician who completed training in emergency medicine, pediatric medicine, and internal medicine going on to additionally complete a formal medical fellowship in Wilderness and Austere Medicine with Wake Forest. He now works with the Emergency, EMS, and Wilderness/Austere groups at Atrium Wake Forest. He is a trained search and rescue technician, works locally on the county rescue level, and as a US Forest Service LEMA and wildland fire medical director. He functions as a medical director for multiple other organizations, has worked on projects for prehospital and emergency medical curriculum and training including adaptive kit construction. He trains regularly in rope and austere rescue techniques and initial stabilization as well as prolonged field care. He additionally works as a physician instructor for multiple agencies tasked with prolonged field care in the austere and high risk environment. He has also completed a diploma in mountain medicine with UNM. He lives in Winston Salem with his wife and enjoys backcountry travel in all forms and endurance training in his off time.

Corey Winstead, PA-C, W/AEMT, FAWM

Corey Winstead is a PA working in Trauma Surgery in Asheville, NC. He previously served as the Assistant Chief of AMRT, and continues to serve on other regional rescue squads. He brings his background in climbing, medicine, and small group leadership to his work with AMRT.

Ed Wolff
